North West Women's Division 2 North: Lancaster & District 2 (2) vs Chorley Phoenix 1 (4)
Lancaster & District Ladies’ Second Team battled hard but ultimately suffered a 2-4 defeat at home to Chorley Phoenix 1 on Saturday, November 22nd, in the North West Women's Division 2 North.
The visiting Chorley Phoenix side controlled the pace and territory for much of the game, putting the Lancaster defence under sustained pressure. Chorley Phoenix opened the scoring in the 10th minute and doubled their lead through Rebecca Halsall in the 23rd minute, giving the home side a challenge to overcome.
Lancaster responded just before halftime when Jessica Burrows struck a phenomenal goal. Showing excellent technique, Burrows received the ball and fired a powerful shot that was "roofed into the top of the net," leaving the Chorley goalkeeper with no chance and pulling the score back to 1-2 in the 26th minute.
Hopes of a comeback were raised early in the second half when Amy Speight found the net for Lancaster in the 43rd minute, leveling the score at 2-2. However, the visitors reacted quickly, regaining the lead just a minute later through paula Thornton. Chorley Phoenix then sealed their victory with a brace from Sarah Bullen, scoring in the 48th and 54th minutes to wrap up the final score at 2-4.
Despite the loss, Lancaster & District 2s showed fighting spirit to equalise early in the second period, but Chorley Phoenix’s continued control proved decisive in the end.
